Taking Steps to Eradicate Polio

Introduction

HOW IT BEGAN

While countries around the world have eradicated polio, this is a disease that still prevails in Pakistan today. Thousands of health workers attempt to vaccinate children across the country from rural areas to urban slums. The goal was to ensure that no child was left behind, which required tracking and visibility on where the health workers were attempting to carry out their vaccinations.

our role

Our role was to re-design the GCSS application and training materials ,used by health workers during polio vaccination campaigns. Additionally, we redesigned the GCSS dashboard - which provides real-time data on the whereabouts of health workers and areas missed for Pakistan’s National Emergency Operation Center. We were engaged by the Rayn Group to support them in these efforts.

Design Process

Our first goal was to understand what the current procedures
were in carrying out polio vaccinations.

We studied the entire process - from health workers being
trained and onboarded to the app, to how they used the app
in the field during vaccine drives, and finally to how the data
was visualised on the existing dashboard.

Learnings

During the training phase we learnt how the health workers were getting onboarded onto the app and the usability issues they had during logging in and starting to use the application.

Our insight also showed that te training method itself plays a great role in how health workers understand and use the app.

Field Observations

When we went to the field with health workers we observed
the role of the application and the use of mobile phones in
supporting them in their routine vaccinations.

The only goal that the health workers had from using the application to tap the tracking button, in order to map their
routes.

We observed how the data was visualised on the dashboard,
and how different members of the organisation review and
make sense of the information coming through.

Service Blueprint

After our observations were completed we created a service blueprint that mapped out all the touch points of each user and the pain points against them. This set the basis for our redesign of the application and dashboard.

Design

After the research phase we went back to the drawing board to redesign the platforms. We created a robust information architecture and a new design system to be implemented across each screen.

Usability Testing

After the completion of the design, we ran usability tests to test our assumptions on how the end users would use the product. After the product was developed, we conducted final quality assurance tests to ensure that the designs were developed according to the standards set forth by the team.

Training Material

To close, we created training material through printed documents and video walkthroughs of how the application was to be used in the field. This helped health workers get comfortable with using the new, updated app.

The Outcome

The GCSS rollout has helped healthcare workers and authorities pinpoint missed cases,
helped administer vaccinations, and driven the path towards zero polio cases in Pakistan.
We're proud to play a part in the countries ongoing efforts to eradicate polio.
